Polyoxymethylene (POM) rod, also known as acetal, polyacetal, and polyformaldehyde, is an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts that require high stiffness, low friction and excellent dimensional stability.

It was discovered by Hermann Staudinger, a German chemist who received the 1953 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He studied the polymerization and structure of POM in the 1920s to research the theory of macromolecules, which he characterized as polymers. Due to initial problems with thermal stability, POM was not commercialized.

First synthesized by DuPont research chemists around 1952, the company filed for patent protection of the homopolymer in 1956 and completed construction of a plant to produce Delrin at Parkersburg, West Virginia, in 1960. Celanese completed its study on a copolymer in 1960, producing Celcon in 1962 and Hostaform in 1963 in Kelsterbach, Germany, under a limited partnership with Ticona.

 ♦ Differences

Delrin is a homopolymer grade, this means that there are advantages and disadvantages over Acetal Rod.

♦ Advantages

Acetal Rod is more suited to the more mechanical applications where an easy to machine and high quality surface finish is required. It is potentially harder wearing than Acetal and is often used in the manufacture of gears or even motorcycle crash pegs.

♦ Disadvantages

POM rod is not suitable for food contact applications and has less resistance to chemical attack. It also has a lower size range availability and can be slightly more expensive.

♦ Applications

POM Rod is suitable for most non food and non highly abrasive component applications. Because POM does not absorb very much moisture, it is an engineering plastic that will suit marine applications as it also has a very low friction co-efficient and possesses exceptional sliding abilities. POM is also very good for manufacturing of many gears, because it is very good to machine and has mechanical strength and provides long life and quiet operation.
